How To Jump Start a Healthy Relationship with Food and Your Body

Friday, September 28th, 2012

By Guest Bloggers McKenzie Hall & Lisa Dixon

When it comes to our jobs, we sometimes feel like we’re on a never ending shift. We’re Registered Dietitians, so that means we share our knowledge about food and the effects it has on the body. Since everyone has to eat, and more recently, food is at the forefront of everyone’s radars, the conversation around food seems to be a constant one.

When we meet someone for the first time and share what we do, it often seems to open the gateway to a game of 20 questions. “What do you think about the Paleo diet?” “It’s a good thing to give up gluten, right?” “Is a banana bad for me?” “So, do you always eat healthy?”  When we’re asked these kinds of questions, we’re happy to answer them. We feel grateful that people feel comfortable enough to ask. But when it comes to the topic of food (and mostly everything else in life, for that matter), people don’t want to be judged.  It is our mission to engage in food based conversation, judgment-free.  We’re on a mission to repair broken relationships with food and to change the negative relationships people have with their bodies to healthy, loving ones.

For us, food is one of those amazing things that enriches lives in so many ways. Food should nourish your life, not the reverse. Food is meant to help us feel energetic and vibrant, not lethargic or drained; food is meant to help us feel beautiful, not meant to induce self-hatred; food is meant to bring our loved ones together, not to be feared at social gatherings; food is meant help fight off disease, not cause it; food is meant to be simple, not complicated.

The Top 12 Superfoods of 2012

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

The plane has landed. I guess I deserve it. I did, after all, write a blog post called ‘Born Skinny.’ My metabolism, the metabolism that has been overly kind to me for 37 years, has officially retired. I think due to overwork. I have joined the rest of humanity- ass fallen, boobs headed south, beautiful cellulite, and finally the inability to eat whatever I want (that’s the worst part of all). Ahh, the wonderful world of aging. It was great while it lasted. Now I actually have to do something called, **gasp** …WORK.

Me at 8 years old

So, seeing that summer is almost upon us, and you know my goal is always to get you as close to your personal best as possible, today I wanted to give you the Top 12 Superfoods you should be incorporating into your diet. Many of these superfoods have helped keep me in good health. Today, we’re getting off the fence, off the junk, and caring for ourselves. Consider this your whack over the head with the frying pan (pardon the irony). It’s May. May is about rebirth, rejuvenation, and regrowth. So, if you’ve been a bad girl, give yourself permission to own that… and then let it go. I’m doing that too.

Activia Launches New French and Greek Yogurts

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I am thrilled today to kick off a brand new section to our site… ERICA’S FAVORITE THINGS!! When I look at my life, there are so many things that I couldn’t live without, that help me thrive, and multi-task with ease, so this section will be for that… my favorites! It’s about time. :) When Dannon approached me to help them spread the word about the launch of their new Activia French and Greek yogurts, of course I was thrilled to do so. How natural? IT’S MY EVERY MORNING BREAKFAST! Activia yogurt is definitely one of my favorite things!!

My followers see my weekly tweets of my power breakfast that gets me through the day… yogurt, organic granola, fresh fruit (that I cut up on Sunday of course, remember?… Hello multi-tasking mommy), and a drizzle of honey. There’s no better way to start my day than with this breakfast. My favorite Activia variety is the thick and creamy Greek nonfat yogurt… it’s deeeeelish.

Because I’m Worth It…

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

By Guest Blogger Erika Rath

300 pounds! 300 pounds! I looked at the scale and couldn’t believe the number staring back at me.  How had this happened?  How had I let myself go?  I was in my early twenties, miserable, and weighing in at an unthinkable 300 pounds.

It had to stop. But how?  I had tried it all.  The diets, the weight loss coaches, the calorie counting, the cabbage soup diet, the no-carb diet, etc… NOTHING WORKED! Sure, I got excited after I lost a couple of pounds, but then I couldn’t stay strict for long enough and fell off the wagon faster than I could shove a chocolate brownie in my mouth.

overweight

Now stay with me here… I ate because I thought I could. Really. Even at my heaviest weight I still managed to stay “in shape” and exercise. In fact, I was a devoted gym member who never stopped going.  And I believed that this gave me the green light to eat as much as my heart desired.  Boy, was I wrong!  My weight kept escalating while my self esteem reached an all-time low.

8 Quick Tips For Staying Fit During The Winter Months

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

If you’re like me, then getting to the gym can be a real chore. Especially now that I’m blogging, I have come up with nearly every excuse in the book to avoid the gym. “I haven’t written a blog in a couple of days, so I want to write this morning. I have no time for the gym today!” Now I’m in pretty decent shape. I won’t lie. I’ve been active my entire life, from ballet as a little girl through to late teens, and then fitness after that.  Being fit and eating healthy have always been a part of my life. But, honestly, I’m just not one of those people who “love the gym.” Obviously, there is no better feeling once you’re finished, and I never regret going once I’m all done, but it’s always a miracle that I make it there. Every time.

I don’t think I’m alone either. We seem to find time to work and play just fine, but eating right and staying fit often take a back seat. Well, we’re coming into the “cozy” months. The “couch potato” months if you live in a city as cold as mine in the winter. The metabolism seems to slow down, we drink some full-bodied reds, and enjoy that yummy mac and cheese and shepherd’s pie that our kids seem to love. Sounds good to me. Except that these are the months that many have a tendency to put weight on. The physical outdoor activities of walking, jogging, swimming, golfing, and many others become literally a “cease and desist.”

Eating Healthy With A Busy Schedule

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

So we’re all busy right? Running to and from places. To Starbucks, to the office, to visit an elderly grandparent, to the gym, to an extra-curricular activity, a meeting. Running running running. And yet, I always roll my eyes at those skinny girls who say, “I just don’t have time to eat!” Yah, WHATEVER! Rome could be burning, and there I am, chompin’ away. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of meals I’ve missed in my ENTIRE lifetime. If you ask my husband, he’ll attest to it! No joke. I NEVER miss a meal.

So, how do you do it? With all the running and juggling, how do you make time for good healthy meals, and avoid skipping? Believe me, I’m just as busy as the next person, but I always make time to eat. I’m not saying I haven’t eaten a salad in my car on my way to a meeting, but I make food a priority, as funny as it sounds. For women juggling it all, food is in fact paramount to your success. And good food, may I add.
