Never Underestimate the Power of Will

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

I feel like everything that’s gone down in the past 24 hours has come down to one word: WILL. Not “will” as in a guy named William. I mean “will” as in sheer desire. As in, wanting something badly enough, to make it happen. Or simply flipped: Willpower!

Last night, at the last minute, I found myself at the hockey game. My hubby was already taking my big son to the game, and I was feeling a little left out. So, thankfully my good friend and it just so happens yesterday’s guest Blogger (whose hubby is one of the players) came to my rescue, and scooped me up to take me out for a night of intense, edge-of-your seat hockey action. See, last night was a BIG game for the Montreal Canadiens. We are currently in the playoffs against one of the best teams in the NHL– The Washington Capitals.  The first team to make it to 4 wins, goes on to further compete for the Stanley Cup. The score out of four games before last night was 3-2 for the Washington Capitals. They pretty much had it in the bag. With Alexander Ovechkin leading the team, they were a sure thing. But we came out firing. I swear, it was like something came over us, this burning desire, a sheer will, and we took the game, 4-1. It was truly like watching Rocky beat Clubber Lang or Ivan Drago. We were the underdog. And so today, we’re 3-3 against Washington, it’s a brand new game, and we’ve put ourselves back in the competition. I’m not sure if it was Washington’s overconfidence and sloppiness, or our great fight that brought us back, but we obviously wanted it badly enough. And we got it.

So besides watching my son go into complete “sugar shock” over popcorn, chips and sour patch kids, watching his excitement made my heart full.

So I decided to start a blog.  I am an extremely busy mother of three young, beautiful children.  I probably don’t have time for this, but who really does?   I have enjoyed being a guest blogger at Women On The Fence, (click here) as well as on friends’ popular blogs. I truly enjoy reading them as well.  Maybe I am just blessed with awesome friends or perhaps they just have captivating subject matter.  Whatever the case- these readings have become a bright spot in my daily regimen- and I figured that I may have some blog in me as well.

I have been “On the Fence” on what to title this little adventure.  So after teeter tottering and going back and forth with ideas for the perfect title, I actually enlisted the advice of a few friends and family members.  I must say that their ideas absolutely sucked!   The goal of my Blog is be informative, funny, entertaining and nurturing.  I am a green mama- in every aspect of the word, although I don’t want the reading based solely around my views or advice about natural living, healthy options in a toxic world, and protecting our children from environmental damage.  I do however, want to dedicate many of my posts to providing you- readers, mothers, learners, listeners to information that you would most likely love to have at your fingertips but can’t find.

Still Sittin’ On The Fence About H1N1?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Hi Ladies,

I’ve already done a Blog entry about H1N1, but I wanted to address this topic again. Everywhere you look, someone, somewhere in the world is reporting on the outbreak or pandemic of H1N1 (aka the Swine Flu). And it’s some really scary sh&t, let me tell you! We hear of cases where people are dying from the Swine flu. If you knew you could prevent this, and it was as simple as getting a little shot, wouldn’t it be a no-brainer? On the flip side, people are dying FROM the H1N1 shot. Should you risk giving a perfectly healthy individual a vaccine, only to have them develop permanent side effects? It’s a very complex issue.

In fact, there are many health practices across Canada who are going so far as to kick patients out of their practices should they opt out of the H1N1 vaccination. A little extreme, no? Doctors are very strongly encouraging the vulnerable population to inoculate; children, the elderly and those with existing medical conditions.

But the truth is, while experts are praising it, it just isn’t an easy sell. People are truly unsure. I heard on the radio yesterday that 59% of Canadians are AGAINST the H1N1 vaccine. I find this astounding. While I have opted out for my kids, I still doubt my decision. I truly do. My big son has viral induced asthma, and he would classify as one of those “vulnerable” groups being urged to get the shot.

H1N1 Injection – To Vaccinate or Not To Vaccinate

‘Tis the season.

Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the crispness of the cool air that has blown in. I love the display of pumpkins and mums at every grocery store or market that I frequent (and I MEAN frequent. I have three small children and a fully stocked ‘fridge is a very, very temporary thing).

I love grabbing a chunky sweater. I love fall sports. I love making stocks from scratch and then turning them into amazing, hearty, yummy and vibrant soups. I love seeing leaves transform into something magical. I love boots more than flip flops (wow!). I LOVE this season.

I can honestly think of only one thing that makes me feel less than giddy about Fall. FLU SEASON! From a personal perspective, I don’t have a ton of anxiety for my own family when it comes to contracting (and dealing. ughhh) with a flu virus, perhaps because I am equipped with some very basic knowledge (and formal education) on how to prevent such an event.
