R.I.P. Whitney Houston 1963-2012

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

If you follow this blog, you know that I take the weekends off to rest my head in order to come back refueled for the week with fresh content. But I had to acknowledge the death of one of my music idols, Whitney Houston. The year was 1986 when my parents took me to see Whitney Houston.  It was the second concert I had ever attended (second to Michael Jackson). We sat second row center.   I knew EVERY word to every song. There I stood for two hours mesmerized– braces, perm, dancing to all her hits. I remember it like yesterday. When Whitney threw me some of her autographed photos, I felt like the luckiest little girl in the world. I still have them today.

Today, I opted not to report the history of her life, nor her rise to stardom, nor her tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, nor her drug addiction. I think we all have the story somewhat straight. We all know she grew up a musical prodigy, surrounded and inspired by strong and soulful female singers; daughter of Cissy Houston, cousin of Dionne Warwick, and goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.

Today, I simply wanted to honor her memory. Whitney’s music will live on in all of us. But I weep for her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, too young to go through life without a mother. And for her mother Cissy, who should not have to outlive her child.

Word-ed Wednesday: National Poetry Month Contest

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Words have always been a part of my life– from the countless diaries I kept as a child, to memorizing the lyrics of THOUSANDS of songs growing up, tape recorder in hand, stopping and starting, to write down the EXACT lyric to a Cyndi Lauper or Michael Jackson song.

It’s amazing how you can string together a few isolated and dangling phrases and make them come alive… a vision in your mind, a story, a poem.

When I shared Maria Shriver’s announcement on Twitter yesterday that she will be guest editing the April issue of Oprah Magazine in honor of National Poetry Month, I first felt envy (keepin’ it real ladies) and then one of my readers gave me a wonderful idea.

In New York, Concrete Jungle Where Dreams Are Made Of, There’s Nothing You Can’t Do, Now You’re in New York

Monday, May 31st, 2010

I’m baaaack ladies! As you all know, I had my girl’s getaway last week, and then totally checked out over the weekend to spend some quality time with family and friends. So, it’s Monday morning, I got my ass back to the gym (thank god), and I’m now I’m in my office, with my coffee, recalling some of my funniest moments of the past few years.

And while I know my trip to NYC isn’t very “on the fence,” it did take me three years to get off the fence and book it, so I’d love to share some funny moments and highlights.

It’s Almost 2010 – What’s Your Game Plan?

Monday, December 14th, 2009

It’s that time of year again! How quickly it came. You know, the time of year when people start thinking about making resolutions, life improvements, and figuring out their game plan for next year.

Often people make resolutions to head back to the gym. I love gyms in January! They’re completely packed. You can’t get a bloody machine if you tried. All the resolutioners are pounding the pavement… hard… literally… for like five minutes. Then, by January 20th, the crowds calm down to normal levels and those people return back to their old habits.

Some people vow to spend more quality time with family members. Others vow to see their friends more often. Or to quit smoking. Or to be kinder or more patient. Or to save more money.

A Week of Insanity

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I’m starting to think October just really ain’t my month.

So, you all know about the scare we got from our little one a couple of weeks ago.  Well unfortunately, we are just coming off another night visit from the Children’s Hospital. In fact, more like a 1:30AM morning visit, but this time for my six-year-old. Big asthma attack at 11PM last night (he suffers a few times a year from viral induced asthma when he gets a bad cold). Shivering, crying, fever, pains, trouble breathing, shaking, etc…

Sounds Swiney right? That’s what I was thinking too…

Anyhow, long story short, they gave him the nebulizer at the hospital, which helped his breathing right away. He was wheezing and coughing and his breathing was shallow. Top it off with an ear infection. X Ray showed no pneumonia, so he’s on banana medicine for 10 days for his ear. He’s already feeling better this morning. Phew. He’s now eating breakfast in bed, and milking this for all it’s worth!
