Keepin’ It Light

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

I thought today I’d do a collaboration of ALL the “On The Fence” topics you have suggested over the past year.

It turns out there are MANY.

Here is the top 35! I didn’t hold back. I have kept track of EVERY “On the fence request” since Day 1. Please feel free to voice your faves for further expanded Blog posts.

Here is what you women sit on the fence about:

1. Vaginal coiffing: Full, trimmed, landing strip, Brazilian, The “Telly Savalas”

2. When I get married, whose last name do I use… mine or my husband’s?

10 Years: The Story of Us

Friday, August 13th, 2010

I blog about all women, for women. I talk about all the issues we as women face today. All the struggles, and all the things we sit on the fence about in life, marriage, career, kids, friendships, health, and more. And I love it. I don’t have to tell you, I say it all the time… I’m living my dream. But I’m only living my dream for one reason… because my husband let’s me do so. So today, on our 10 year anniversary, I want to pay tribute to him.

This is our story…

What Life’s All About

Monday, April 5th, 2010

It’s Saturday night. I’m in a strange bed. My hubby is next to me. My boys are in another bed, passed out cuddled up into each other, wiped from a day at the Zoo and running around. I’m bloated and my jeans have left bruises on my hips (literally) from the tightness from all of this week’s eating, but I’m as happy as a clam. Because at the end of the day, for me, family is what it’s all about.

We decided to visit Toronto for the weekend to see family and friends and to take the boys to the Hockey Hall of Fame. They have been off from school all week, so besides a day trip to the US on Wednesday and the weekend in Toronto, I did my best to keep them occupied and happy. I must say, mission accomplished.

After pounding the crap out of a mannequin at a kick-boxing class this morning, I felt great. Ready to take on Toronto. There I was, sweating my ass off, music BLASTING, boxing gloves, punching this dummy in the chest, in the face, and laughing. I looked like the biggest rookie… everyone was concentrating, working, punching, and there I was, perma-smile, cuz the instructor was again BLASTING my favorite music (This is how we do it, I got the power, etc…), and I looked too happy to be beating the crap out of a rubber guy staring so seriously back at me. But I felt free. And really, at the end of the day, life’s about freedom and doing the things you love to do. I must tell my gym in Montreal to buy some of these dummies for kick-boxing classes. They rock!

Help, I’m Totally Frazzled!

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

I would like today’s Blog to address a comment a friend of mine made to me the other day. It went something like this:

“Erica, I have to tell you, I’m losing my patience.  I’m yelling at my kids a lot lately.  I can’t remember the last time I sat on the floor with them to do a puzzle. I’m short tempered with my husband. I’m pulled in a million different directions, and I’m completely frazzled!”

Can any of you relate? I gotta admit, I can completely relate to this on most days.

As a stay-at-home mom, as a working mom, as a single mom, or as a busy career woman, we are under tremendous strains. Our entire day is planned, from the moment the alarm goes off, to the time we plop into bed at night. We run from thing to thing, from this to that. In fact, I sometimes feel like Thing One and Thing Two from The Cat in the Hat. Look at these two creatures! They look like someone pressed the fast-forward button on them!

Emotional Cheating Vs. Physical Cheating. The Debate.

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

I will never betray this woman’s trust or confidence, but a girlfriend of mine a few weeks ago told me she has been “sexting” and having an emotional affair with a man for two years. Her husband and children have no clue. She says it isn’t cheating.

Let’s look at this together. I’m interested in topic.

Firstly, let’s review a few studies together and see how women and men view affairs and cheating.

Sometimes Straying From the Path Ain’t So Bad After All!

“When you go through life, so sure of where you’re headin’, and you wind up lost, it’s the best thing that could have happened”

-Brad Paisley, “Find Your Self”

You may find this odd, but I wasn’t really a Brad Paisley fan until this morning. I found myself returning from the two hour marathon that is the morning drop off ritual (the two older to one school, the little guy to pre-school) and listening to the closing credits for Pixar’s’ “Cars”. Despite the fact that I’ve seen this movie close to a thousand times the song I quoted previously really jumped out at me. As a matter of fact the lesson of the entire film hit me powerfully right between the eyes. Who among us hasn’t veered off course because of detour signs somewhere in life?

One of the things I miss the most in life (besides a firm backside and my natural hair color) is the crystal clear vision I had of what I wanted for myself in the future. I was rock steady, unshakable in my convictions.  It was almost as if it was predetermined and nothing could get in the way. There was no self doubt, I was positively fearless. I can picture that young gal with her Pollyannish bravado just waiting to jump out into the world with her equally enthusiastic friends. “Here we go!” they all shout, knowing that with hard work and determination they would all arrive at their destination.

Cut to twenty years later and take a look at how many of us stuck to the original plan. Some of us are close, several are right on the mark, and most of us aimed high but didn’t hit the target. Let me preface this by letting you know that most of the women I spoke to were very honest about what they really wanted deep in their hearts. Even if that wish were as kooky as wanting to be a fairy princess, I let them run with it. How far away from the prize did we find ourselves? Let’s see.

The In-Laws Conversation

mother-in-law-from-hell

Ladies, I just had to address the subject of in laws for all my girlfriends in Montreal. The stories, the laughs, the tears, it’s all very… well… amusing. I can’t tell you how many of my friends love to vent about their in laws!

It sort of goes something like this… “My mother in law is planning my whole life, and I want to tell her to back off… My father in law gave my child a hamburger when I clearly told him we’re VEGETARIANS… My mother in law is suffocating me…” And the stories go on and on.

So, do you tell them how you REALLY feel, or do you suck it up to avoid an argument?  It’s time to get off the fence and speak your ground, ladies! Sucking it up will only poison yourself and lead to resentment towards your husbands or boyfriends. There are ways to get your message across without playing mean, or hurting feelings.
