The Disillusionment of an Entrepreneur

Friday, May 4th, 2012

By Guest Blogger Prerna Gupta

When I became an entrepreneur at the age of twenty-three, I began in earnest, as do all entrepreneurs, chasing a dream. My dream was clear. I would build a consumer technology company that reached ten million people and sell the company for millions of dollars, before the age of thirty. Then, as the dream went, I would retire to an oceanfront house on a warm Pacific beach and learn how to surf.

I recently had the fortune of celebrating a year in which I saw that lofty goal fulfilled. My company’s iPhone apps had over ten million downloads, and a competitor paid a large sum of money to acquire what we had built, just a week before my thirtieth birthday. Dream had become reality.

I took a trip soon after to a secluded surf beach on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. Sandy-bottom beach break. White sand. House so close to water that the sound of crashing waves made it hard to sleep. This was it. I had made it.

Taking The Dive Into Passion

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Many of you have been asking how I got started on my journey into entrepreneurship at age 24, then copped out for almost 4 years, then how I jumped back into it last year.

I think the PREFACE of my new book says it all.

On April 7, 1975, I was born to two incredibly wonderful, doting parents. My early memories are of my mother and I—always together, always talking. I was constantly being nurtured. My father was out hunting to provide for his family, all the while fighting his insecurities as a result of growing up lacking many resources at home and having to help his family financially at a young age.

My parents were polar opposites. My mother, a teacher and therapist, was calm and rational. My father was an astute businessman, people person, and lover of life. But they were a unified front when it came to raising me. I was taught the value of a dollar early. Whenever I received my allowance, it was half to spend and half to save. As a child, I played at entrepreneurship. Each day I would play in the basement with my dolls (I had no siblings). I would develop a new business idea each day—opening a restaurant, designing clothing, or simply selling something. I loved sales. Moreover, I was given every encouragement to work hard and to chase my dreams.

Into an endless sea of opportunity!

I have a few questions for you:

  • Do you wake up Monday morning and wish it were Friday already?
  • Do you feel unsatisfied with your current job and wish you had more flexibility?
  • Are you tired of getting a paycheck for doing something you hate?
  • Are you a stay-at-home mom who is antsy to finally do something for herself?
  • Are you a professional who is looking to change career paths entirely?
  • Are you burning out in the corporate world?
  • Have you ever thought of turning your hobby into a career?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you just may be ready to get off the fence and START YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

My Book

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

So, as you know, last week I announced I was writing a book. What could she possibly be writing about, you may have thought?

Well it turns out this opportunity presented itself and I just couldn’t pass it up. It was everything I absolutely know and love, and have 15 years experience in. WOMEN, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, BUSINESS AND BALANCE.

Let me explain. There is a book series that will be coming out this year, the first ever 10+ Book Women’s Series ever to be launched, and I was asked to be one of the authors  in the series. The brand is:

The 99 Things I Wish I Knew Before…

Dontcha love it? As in, the 99 things people wished they knew before– planning their wedding, retiring, having “the talk” with your kids, getting fit after 40, taking up golf, etc… It’s a self-help series, and will be available at bookstores, online at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com, on The Kindle, IPhone, etc… The concept behind it is, life is hectic, and sometimes we need great quick tips and techniques without reading a 300 page book. So, it’s 99 points, one point per page of lessons and tricks. Sort of like your own personal “coach in a pocket.” You may know one of the authors, Indy 500 race car driver champion, Sarah Fisher. She will be writing, 99 Things Women Wish They Knew Before… Getting Behind the Wheel of Their Dream Job.
