Staying Healthy

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

I can’t believe it’s almost that time again… winter. Beside beautiful falling snow, winter often brings something entirely different — flu season!  In fact, my family’s skin has already faded from golden brown (summer lovin’) to pale white to green-like. My boys have started their first runny noses, and I have been fighting a sinus infection for about three weeks. We slacked off with our health regime all summer long, because we had the benefits of natural sunlight, the great outdoors, and we ate a ton of fruit. However, with back-to-school, a bunch of kids packed into close quarters, for hours on end, it’s only a matter of time before everyone is sick again.

So, seeing that this is the season we’re heading into, I wanted to give you some great ways to “flu-proof” yourself and your family this winter season. I am tightening up my regime, and I already have my kids back on their vitamins and pro-biotic. If you’re on the fence about what works and what doesn’t with regards to your family’s well-being, let me give you some proven facts. Even with germs spreading like wildfires, you can absolutely take your health into your own hands. There are many way you can lower your risk of getting sick.

Because I’m Worth It…

By Guest Blogger Erika Rath

300 pounds! 300 pounds! I looked at the scale and couldn’t believe the number staring back at me.  How had this happened?  How had I let myself go?  I was in my early twenties, miserable, and weighing in at an unthinkable 300 pounds.

It had to stop. But how?  I had tried it all.  The diets, the weight loss coaches, the calorie counting, the cabbage soup diet, the no-carb diet, etc… NOTHING WORKED! Sure, I got excited after I lost a couple of pounds, but then I couldn’t stay strict for long enough and fell off the wagon faster than I could shove a chocolate brownie in my mouth.

overweight

Now stay with me here… I ate because I thought I could. Really. Even at my heaviest weight I still managed to stay “in shape” and exercise. In fact, I was a devoted gym member who never stopped going.  And I believed that this gave me the green light to eat as much as my heart desired.  Boy, was I wrong!  My weight kept escalating while my self esteem reached an all-time low.

12 Tips On Aging… Not On Fast Forward

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Happy Monday, Ladies! I hope you all enjoyed your Mother’s Day. I had a wonderful weekend with my family. Yes, I even DANCED Saturday night! If you’re a follower of this Blog, you may recall I wrote a post on aging gracefully. I pointed out the simple fact, that no matter how rich, how poor, how thin, how happy, how unhappy you are, there is one thing in this world you cannot fight, and just happen to be battling at the EXACT same rate as the next person… AGING. Madonna is over 50. Yes, Even Madonna turned 50! Enough said. But in that Blog post, I talked about my desire to age without any help from Dr. 90210. I wrote about how to age “gracefully.” But, today, we’re taking it one step further.  Today, we’re talking how to put that aging process on slow-mo. And I’m not on the fence here. I just turned 35 and because I don’t intend on going the plastic route, I’m gonna fight the shit out of this aging process.

slowing down aging process

Now, this morning didn’t quite help the whole aging thing. In fact, this morning just helped speed up the process instead of slow it down. I was all ready for the gym and on my way to carpool, when I got a frantic call from my husband to get to the gas station immediately, buy a jerry can of gas, and bring it to “Lemieux” street, as his car had conked out… on the way to the gas station. Naturally, this threw off my whole morning, completely frazzled me, and made me come up with yet another excuse to skip the gym. So I did, and I’m in still in Lululemon workout clothes and haven’t yet broken a sweat today. I’m sitting idle, sipping lattes at Starbucks, not fighting any aging process at all. :)

10 Tips To Spring Clean Your Body

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Spring is definitely coming. Everyone was up early in our house this morning, because of the brighter early am’s. The bad thing… less sleep. The good thing… me not ranting like a fish-wife for everyone to get out of bed and not be late for school. Me and rushing don’t do well together. At all. Last week, I blogged about Spring Cleaning your house and your life. Today I want to talk about spring cleaning your body. I think we often take our bodies for granted. Sometimes our bodies can take the abuse, but sometimes, as in the case of Corey Haim, our bodies just cannot. It’s very sad and tragic. So how can you be good to your body, so that it will be good to you?

On Aging– Hopefully Gracefully

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.
– Mark Twain

If there’s one thing that no one in this world is exempt from, no matter how rich, how poor, how thin, how nice, how evil, how generous, WHATEVER… it’s AGING. Yes, we are all aging. And we are all fighting it at the exact same rate as the next person. Some will age better, some will age worse, but it’s a process we all must face whether we like it or not.

seuss-aging

2010 is a big year for me. In April, I will turn 35, and in August, I will be married 10 years. Yet, it all feels like yesterday that I met my hubby (I was 17), and then pushed out a couple of kids. And although I think I keep myself looking pretty decent – I work out, I eat very well (minus McDonald’s which I LOVE and don’t deprive myself of), I am mentally quite sane, and the eternal optimist, I do notice the aging process happening. Not in a major full on wrinkle kind of way, rather the “Wow, I’m just not 25 years old anymore” kind of way.

Off The Fence & Into The Gym

Monday, February 8th, 2010

By Guest Blogger David Snively

I’ve been training clients for more than 25 years now, mostly women, and I’ve heard my fair share of workout goals from the opposite sex.  For the most part, they are body part related– the eternal quest for thinner thighs, flatter stomachs, and more toned arms, and that has continued till this day.  I have learned to listen to their requests, sympathize with body image discontent, and do my best to deliver results.   I combine my own agenda as a trainer with 25 years of experience and constant learning,  my life experience as a human being,  my clients’ goals, and I deliver the very best workout advice I can.

I feel very blessed that I do something in life that I truly love, and I especially love working with women.  Being a gay man, I can relate to this whole body image focus.  It’s all about big pecs, washboard abs, and nicely shaped buttocks in the “oh so shallow” party scene of the gay world. And yes I was once a “Bad Boy Dancer” at the Leather Ball Circuit Party, Black and Blue weekend.  I have since retired from the party scene, it was really never my thing. I married the love of my life, and we have a beautiful two year old daughter via gestational surrogacy.   All this information is unrelated to training tips, but it somewhat connects me to woman and their issues, and let’s face it ladies, no one can appreciate you more, or is going to tell you the truth like a gay man.  Enough about me, let’s talk about you.
