Maximizing Your Holiday Time

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

By our anonymous Man On The Fence

It’s the Holidays!

Holiday time for our family has always been a big deal. Many years ago when my children were small, (and I was still married), my ex-wife and I made great use of our holiday time. Instead of running south and contending with the hoards of irritated travelers, we stayed put… the ultimate ‘staycation.’ I can recall with great affection, hauling in our Christmas tree and setting the presents below, sitting by the fire and decorating ginger bread houses. I remember it like it was yesterday– Christmas morning, our little one’s running down the stairs, still in their pj’s, hair disheveled, smelly breath and smiles beaming across their faces as they opened their presents. I filmed several Christmases’ and took enough photos to assemble a great collection of what our family was like during these happy times. I love to recall these precious memories. That feeling of success in my heart, feeling so fortunate, and having my family all to myself, with no schedules, no school, no interference from outside sources.

For many of us, Holiday time has become a chore and obligation. Some of us save all year to “spoil “ourselves with a trip to warmer climates, and in the process, defeat the purpose of Holiday time.  Traveling with little kids is never easy, let alone with all the new security measures at airports and the possibility of weather delays. The long lines at restaurants, the inflated prices, can all make for an agonizing and taxing vacation. I am a big proponent of staying put, as home is very often the best place for a great holiday.

Living Without Regrets

Friday, December 25th, 2009

“We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.” Jim Rohn

no regrets

I think we all wonder sometimes what our life WOULD have been like, had we taken that other path. Had we stayed with this person, or taken that job. Kind of like that Gwyneth Paltrow movie Sliding Doors. The main character is about to catch the train, or miss the train. The movie is about how catching or missing the train affected her life in very different ways.

So as we approach the New Year, I think it’s only fitting to talk about regrets. We’ve all had a few (no, I’m not reciting Frank Sinatra’s My Life). We’ve all made decisions in our lives that we wish we could have taken back or done differently. I can’t say I have major regrets thus far. I didn’t lose my virginity too young. I tried drugs at a respectable age. The only thing I did too young maybe, was smoke cigarettes. Eight is a little young, I agree. But the majors, like my career choice, or my life partner, or how many kids I had, amongst others, I ain’t got one regret. The only regret I have, is the handful of times where I wish I had handled myself differently in certain situations. But, once the cat is out of the bag, it’s very hard to put him back in. I do, however, think the things we have regrets about build character and make us harder. Mistakes are stepping stones. It’s not bullshit, it’s true. (more…)

Decisions About Someone Else’s Life

Friday, December 11th, 2009

So here I am now, sitting at my computer, a complete flubbering mess. This morning, my whole family attended a religious ceremony at my my son’s school (my grade one-er). There we were, all six of us; me, hubby, two grandmothers, two grandfathers, beaming with pride. I was on video camera duty, hubby on regular camera duty. We were all right there, the cheering squad, front row.

And as they called his name to come up and receive his siddur, or Jewish Prayer Book,  I just couldn’t hold it together. He mouthed to me during the show “I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO CRY!” I can’t help it. I’m sensitive, I’m emotional, I’m a crier. The kids put on a show for over an hour. They were perfect. It was first class. And I wasn’t the only mess by the way. A few other moms also had their Kleenexes out.

So as I pondered today’s Blog post, something about decisions and choices resonated for me. Choices and decisions we make about someone ELSE’S life. Be it a sick parent, a handicapped sibling, a child. Be it a decision a doctor makes for his patient, or a lawyer makes for his client. We often have to make choices and decision for others. How do we make the right choice?
