Liz, I’m thrilled to have you, a savvy entrepreneur and mom grace our blog. I don’t think Liz Lange Maternity needs much introduction– most of our mom readers know this well-known, fantastic brand. I loved my Liz Lange Maternity clothes when I was pregnant- comfort, style, affordability. Please tell us the story of how Liz Lange Maternity was born.

I never intended to be a fashion designer or an entrepreneur. I graduated from Brown with a BA in Comparative Literature. And after working at Vogue for a few years, I left to go work for a struggling fashion designer whose work I admired. While there, and in my 20s, my friends started to get pregnant (I myself was not pregnant, but I was newly married and it was that time in my life.) They all had the same complaint– that they couldn’t find anything that they liked to wear while pregnant (This was 1996 – maternity apparel landscape was very, very different!)
I noticed 2 things that led to my aha moment: my friends were spending (they had no choice, nothing in their closets fit!) So I knew that pregnant women were definitely spending on their maternity wardrobes, and they were spending on items they didn’t like. And two, that they looked much better when squeezed into a stretch tight non-maternity outfit than in an oversized traditional maternity outfit. So I thought, “I get it, maternity clothing needs to be fitted and stretchy and women will buy it because they will like it and they will actually look great.”

As I’m preparing to wind down for a couple of weeks, I can’t help but reflect upon the past year. 2011 has been, well… one of the most interesting years of my life.
There were highs:
We took the kids to Disney World for the first time (it was my first time too).

The plane ride home
In January, I was named to the coveted list of The Top 20 Women in Canada.

Last week, my mother schlepped me to a taping of The Today Show (she is a LONG TIME fan), which taped here in Montreal, Canada. I watched with pride as they showcased all the incredible talent and highlights that have come out of my unique city… Cirque de Soleil, Celine Dion, POUTINE!
Well, this gal is no different. Shira Lazar, Executive Producer and Host of What’s Trending on CBSNews.com is another great success story out of Montreal, and I was thrilled to interview her about her growth, her advice for budding entrepreneurs and medialites, about social media, and more.

So without further ado, my interview with Shira Lazar…

I would like to share a story that resonated for me this morning with February now upon us. It happened at yoga class a few weeks ago.
I was totally into it… relaxed, lying on my back, eyes closed, breathing. I had worked hard during the hour, so my body was feeling fatigued. I’ve also been completely overloaded lately, so I just allowed myself to sink into the mat, and listen to the teacher’s soothing voice. His comments about why we have chosen to come to yoga class today, and how we choose to live our lives each and every day was very calming. I was truly in the moment.

So, we had just finished a 10-minute relaxation pose, corpse pose, and the instructor said he would like to share a story. It went something like this– he was babysitting his 18 month old nephew, when he entered the baby’s room, and saw this little cute boy without his diaper. All over the walls and the floor was the baby’s poop. He had shmeered it everywhere! The little boy was laughing, despite the instructor feeling completely panicked. He proceeded to ask his nephew, “why are you playing with your own poop?” to which the little cutie answered, “because it’s fun!”

I think you readers will be happy to know that I have since recovered from last week’s nervous breakdown.
Yes, I’m back… it’s me, Erica the overall normal individual, flawed, but still together. It’s amazing what a little support does. You women gave me perspective, a chance to take a breath and realize, we all lose it, and that’s okay. It’s how quickly we bounce back that’s the key.
One of my most popular Blog posts and concepts that really took off over the past year, has been my Bucket List Blog. On February 19th, 2010 I urged you to make a list of your dreams– or simply a list of 25 things you want to do before you “kick the bucket.” The concept pushed many, including Brooke Burke to create her Bucket List which she spoke of on The Oprah Show, on her Blog, and in her upcoming book, The Naked Mom. Because of the power of the Bucket List, and with the approach of 2011, instead of making New Year’s resolutions this year, I wanted to encourage all my readers who haven’t yet done so to make their Bucket List. I’ve re-posted mine below, added a few updates in RED (’cause it’s almost been a year), and then, I’d love to see yours.

“A MAN CAVE”– “A part of a home specifically reserved for adult male activities, such as drinking beer and watching TV; often a garage or den”
(Definition Wiktionary)

If you’ve been following me on Twitter or Facebook this week, you know I have been ALL OVER a recent article I read about mom caves, the latest trend (thank you Holly Pavlika of BigFuel.com for sharing). It’s all the rage. A MOM cave you say? We’ve all heard of THE MAN CAVE, where men go to decompress, have a bear, watch a porn, whatever. But a mom cave? And I’m here to tell you– yes, yes, yes!
Now the concept behind the man cave goes back many years, and stemmed from the idea that when a man came home to his wife and children, he first needed to go to his “cave” to decompress after a long day. But with more and more women in the workforce, contributing financially, and frankly, just downright exhausted and needing more “me-time“, more women are craving the same decompression time and cave time that men crave.

“I learned that we can do anything, but we can’t do everything.. at least not at the same time. So think of your priorities not in terms of what activities you do, but when you do them. Timing is everything.” –Dan Millman
As I lead in to today’s Blog post, which I dedicate to my husband, who when I asked last night, “Honey, what should I write about tomorrow?” and he replied, “Hmmm. I like Priorities,” I loved his suggestion. I said, “Like what? Like making your friends and family a priority? Like setting financial priorities? Like what?” He replied again, “Priorities.”

So, I found a great little story on the web about priorities in life, and I want to share it with you. It’s quite profound, and I am sure it will speak to you. (more…)
