Getting Over Getting Older

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

By Guest Blogger Helene Oseen

Most of the time I like being fifty-something, but this aging stuff is complex. Inside I still feel like I’m in my thirties, but then I realize that’s the age of my children. One day recently I caught a glimpse of my hands and became aware of the fact that they look like my mother’s. I’m trying to make peace with the lines around my eyes and brackets around my mouth, justifying them with the fact that I laugh a lot, but saggy skin on my hands – yikes – I’m old.

Although it’s easier said than done, there is no point in having angst about aging. Two undeniable truths are: everyone ages and aging sucks.

Summer Camps and Flood Gates

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Sometimes I just feel so happy that I have a Blog. It’s become my little place I go when I’m feeling happy, sad, confused, angered, anxious and celebratory.

This morning I shipped two little boys off to camp. I know what you’re saying… “Day camp! Get over yourself, Mamma!” But really, I’m not over it. I’m totally still in it. And the flood gates haven’t shut off yet. If you’re a mom with a kid starting a first day of school, a first day of daycare, a first day of camp, or any place where you’re sending your child into the unknown, then I know you can relate. Unless you can’t, and that’s cool too. ;)

I sprung out of bed at 6am this morning with a nervous stomach. Both boys are starting brand new camps today. The Watermelon Bus, that is, the bus taking my 6 year old 45 minutes away, twice a day, wasn’t coming until 8:30Am. Tons of time!  I had prepared their backpacks last night, bought them their favorite plain pizza for their first day, and laid their clothes out. But still, I figured between making lunches, getting them to eat breakfast, and calming my 6 year old’s nerves about the swim program, we’d need extra time.

You’re So Vain. You Prob’ly Think This Song Is About You…

By our Anonymous Man On The Fence

We often think of the notion of “being vain” as a modern invention. However, go back several thousand years in time, and you can imagine the same issues existed for Cleopatra, as an example. But think about it– under all the layers of make-up, hair spray, body cream, shampoo, sunscreen, lip balm and scrubs, WHO ARE WE? Under all the jackets, shirts, ties, skirts, dresses and underwear, WHO ARE WE?

who are we

Think of how often we admire ourselves in the mirror and pretend that all those accouterments make us who we are. Undeniably as we age, we move from one phase to another– that is, most of us do! In the process, we see those around us get wrinklier, fatter, skinnier, dryer and saggier. Basically the way I have thought this thing through is, we are all effectively born to die. But even still, we ought to make our best efforts to evolve early in life. Waiting till you’re thirty or fifty to make that self improvement is too late. So I would like to ask you a question… when you look at yourself in the mirror, are you looking inside yourself, or are you only looking at your exterior, superficial self?

The Bucket List

Friday, February 19th, 2010

I must be subconsciously thinking about my mortality this week, because Wednesday’s Blog was about aging, and now I’ve created my Bucket List. I watched the movie “The Bucket List” last night, and cried for two straight hours. What a fabulous movie. But my bucket list, (everything I want to do before I “kick the bucket”) is really a Hodge Podge of the realistic, the possible and the improbable. I wanted to share mine and encourage you to make your own. Maybe it will get you off the fence about something you’ve been sitting on for way too long.  Call it a bucket list, but really, all it is, is the 25 Things I want to do before I die. And I ain’t on the fence about any of ‘em.

Here they are, in no particular order (ok maybe Oprah and Ellen are at the top for a reason)… (more…)
