INTERVIEW: Erica Diamond Gets Up Close and Personal with Kristen Johnston

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

I was watching 20/20 about three weeks ago, and saw the familiar, funny girl that is Kristen Johnston. But, it wasn’t so funny. It was deep, and it was dark. I was mesmerized. Her story was riveting. I chased her down until I found her, and am thrilled to feature her today on WomenOnTheFence.com.

I give you, actress, author, and activist Kristen Johnston.

ED – Kristen, take us through your childhood, and how you came to acting, namely your role as Sally Solomon in the hit series 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Overcoming Addiction: A Work Still in Progress.

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

WARNING: Today’s post is disturbing. But it is an important read for everyone. My goal today is to release the shame and stigma of addiction. Many people in this country are suffering. You might be suffering in silence. I urge you to read this. It might encourage you, or someone you love, to seek help.

I’m going to start by saying my name is Charity and I am an alcoholic. A recovering one that is. I have been sober since August 24th, 2010.

For the sake of this blog, I will summarize my story the best way I can. I will not go into too much of my early life and the things that happened, that made me who I am today. I have very few memories of my childhood. I was molested from the age of 3 to 5, though I have blocked out most of the memories. I also have a big blank spot from ages 6 to 10. My mom had many boyfriends, so I think more happened than I am able to recall.

Behind Closed Doors: I Married a Sex Addict

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

While I realize that not everyone is facing this issue, and while the topic may not have the usual “mass appeal,” it is quietly going on behind closed doors in many homes around the world. Today, I wanted to crush the shame, and help those who might be suffering.

When I first met the man who is now my husband and he told me that his work was counseling men with sexual addiction, I remember clearly the feeling of wanting to stick my fingers in my ears while loudly shouting “la-la-la-la.” That was quickly followed by the immediate conclusion that this man was not someone I would want to talk with ever again. But life as a jokester led me to want to get to know this man, even with a career that was initially oh-so-embarrassing to hear about. And it didn’t end there. I soon learned that not only did George counsel sex addicts; he was a recovering sex addict himself.

Sexual addiction is a compulsive sexual behavior that dominates an addict’s life, taking priority over work, friends, and even family.

Charlie Sheen: My Side

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Alright, I’m doing something today I rarely do… give my side on tabloid gossip. A lot of you asked my opinion on Charlie Sheen’s recent antics. I watched pretty much all of it yesterday… The Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Piers Morgan interview last night. And here is where I differ with 90% of all of you out there. In my Facebook feed, I read things like, “Pompous, asshole, nutcase, arrogant, putz.” And see, I didn’t get that feeling AT ALL. You just had to watch his eyes. This man is obviously sick. Clearly ill. While I’m no Dr. Drew, I’m merely a psychology major and intuitive woman, and I know this may be a bold thing to say, but I have mental illness in my family, and it looked a lot like that.

So, to answer your questions, I see everyone’s side. I see CBS’s side getting fed up with him and teaching him a lesson by cancelling the rest of the season, but then you can’t deny his power to command ratings and pull the show. So, he definitely has a point that they probably need him more than he needs them. But this is really of no relevance to me– a case of “he said, she said” is just gossip and a waste of time.

Mad Money: Yay or Nay?

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

By Guest Blogger Lindsay Blanche

Did your mother ever tell you to keep some “mad money” around just in case? Mine did, and hers was in the bottom drawer, towards the back of her small jewelry box. Relatively speaking, it was not a lot of money. I believe it was anywhere between two and four hundred dollars, depending on the time of the year. But the important thing was that it was a secret from my dad. Even though she frequently dipped into this fund to buy the holiday and birthday gifts for my dad, she never told him it was there.

My mother was a wife at the age of 18, and was married to my dad for forty years. This was a long time before separate checking accounts were a common thing, and she would never have considered not consulting him on a major purchase. So, the concept of her hiding money from him was a VERY big deal.

An Earth Day Perspective: The Making of An Unlikely Environmentalist

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

By Guest Blogger Dr. Sarah Warren

Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. (Wikipedia)

Happy Earth Day Everyone! When I came across Women On The Fence Blog, I instantly became a loyal reader. I too, like most of you women, come here for a daily dose of hope and inspiration. So, when I reached out to Erica about possibly becoming a guest Blogger and then told her of my background, she excitedly asked me to write a special Blog post for Earth Day. As an environmentalist and big protector of the earth we live in, my goal is not to convert you to a full blown earthy in just one post. Rather, it’s to provide you with some facts, and get you MOVING in the right direction, perhaps as a more mindful and respectful person of our earth. So if today, you decide to unplug your coffee machine after you’re done brewing that cup, or recycle your cereal box, because something clicked in your brain, then I have done my job.

Ok, here is a story. My story. It’s of the making of a highly unlikely environmentalist.
