Richard Branson and a Grand Prix Weekend

Richard Branson

When you hear the name Richard Branson, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Money? Power? Success? Philanthropy? Well, yes, all these may be true, but I had the great fortune of sitting down to chat with Sir Richard Branson this weekend, and getting to see a softer side.  It was amazing to meet a great visionary who I actually wrote about in my book, 99 Things Women Wish They Knew Before Staring Their Own Business. In fact, I gave him a signed copy to take on the plane! :)

Richard Branson started his entrepreneurial journey at the young age of 16. His magazine called Student eventually kicked off his next venture… a brand we all know well, the Virgin Empire. First came the chain of record stores, Virgin Records in 1972. Then Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1980, and then expanded into Virgin Records music label. In fact, the name “Virgin” was suggested by one of Branson’s early employees because they were all new at this business– virgins. I love it.

Richard Branson is the 5th richest person in the United Kingdom and 254th in the world according to Forbes‘ 2011 list of billionaires, with an estimated net worth of approximately £2.58 billion (US$4.2 billion) (Wikipedia). But enough about that…

Mom 2.0 Summit Recap

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

So when I told my friends I was off to New Orleans to speak at Mom 2.0 Summit, they were all like, “What’s a Mom conference?” Even I was a little skeptical, I’ll admit. It all could have sounded a little bit flowery– sounding perhaps like a bitch session with a bunch of moms getting together, hanging and kvetching about motherhood and trying to learn the tools to become a better parent.

Well, that could NOT have been further from the truth. The “Moms” I met this weekend were “knock your socks off” capable. These were no silver-spoon mamas. These were serious rockstars. And the Brands that came, came to play ball.

When I arrived in NOLA, having left the 40 degree Montreal weather behind, and walking right into the 88 degree humidity, I realized I had packed all wrong. But hey, I just surrendered and watched my hair-do become a hair-don’t. My cab brought me directly to the clean and sunny Ritz Carlton, and that was lovely of course. I left my bags in the room and headed downstairs to meet the “Mompreneurs,” many of them whose Blogs and websites I have followed, but never met.

I don’t usually share all the press that Women On The Fence gets. But I thought there was a good underlying message in this interview… ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE (as the interviewer called it), so I decided to post it. It is also posted for the new readers to get some background on how we started. Id’ love your thoughts.

Here’s my interview with Julio’s Sol – Inspirational stories with passionate people.

An Honor

Monday, January 17th, 2011

I was shocked and thrilled to see this posted on Twitter last night. Suzy Welch, author and wife of Jack Welch, businessman and former Chairman & CEO of General Electric, posted this about my new book, 99 Things Women Wish They Knew Before Starting Their Own Business.

And for those that asked me, no, I never sent her a copy of my book. To my surprise, she bought it off Amazon and then shared these lovely words last night.

It was an exciting moment. I wanted to share it with you, my loyal readers.

Taking The Dive Into Passion

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Many of you have been asking how I got started on my journey into entrepreneurship at age 24, then copped out for almost 4 years, then how I jumped back into it last year.

I think the PREFACE of my new book says it all.

On April 7, 1975, I was born to two incredibly wonderful, doting parents. My early memories are of my mother and I—always together, always talking. I was constantly being nurtured. My father was out hunting to provide for his family, all the while fighting his insecurities as a result of growing up lacking many resources at home and having to help his family financially at a young age.

My parents were polar opposites. My mother, a teacher and therapist, was calm and rational. My father was an astute businessman, people person, and lover of life. But they were a unified front when it came to raising me. I was taught the value of a dollar early. Whenever I received my allowance, it was half to spend and half to save. As a child, I played at entrepreneurship. Each day I would play in the basement with my dolls (I had no siblings). I would develop a new business idea each day—opening a restaurant, designing clothing, or simply selling something. I loved sales. Moreover, I was given every encouragement to work hard and to chase my dreams.
