Tips for Co-Parenting after Divorce

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Let me start by saying, I am one of the world’s biggest supporters and advocates for marriage. There is thankfully no divorce on either side of our family. This blog post is by no means meant to encourage divorce. I believe divorce should be a very last resort.  Divorce is, however, the statistic for one out of every two marriages, and so today I wanted to offer tips to those people affected. My greatest hope is that if you are currently struggling in your own marriage or relationship, this will be your wake-up call to get off the fence and get help, before it is too late.

Happens everyday.

YAH OKAY!!! WHATEVER! Hasn’t happened once.

Wordless Wednesday: Grouchy Mom

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Someone’s sick. Someone’s exhausted.

My little man has been sick since Sunday. Fever hasn’t broken yet. Doctor says it’s just a virus.

Warning: mild venting to follow…

Nurse Mommy hasn’t slept in three nights… at all. It’s Teddy Bear Day at school today and my son is missing it. It’s going to be a magnificent day in Montreal – warm and sunny and I’ll be poolside bedside. I haven’t been able to work this week. I haven’t been able to work out this week. I feel like an asshole complaining– I did sign up to be a mom, after all. But I’m tired.

Ok, I’m done.

Redshirting: The New Normal

Monday, March 5th, 2012

It is called “redshirting.” Perhaps you have heard of it.

“Redshirting for young children refers to the practice of postponing entrance into kindergarten of age-eligible children in order to allow extra time for socioemotional, intellectual, or physical growth. This occurs most frequently where children’s birthdays are so close to the cut-off dates that they are very likely to be among the youngest in their kindergarten class.”  (Wikipedia)

In simpler terms, ‘redshirting kindergarten’ is holding you child back one extra year before sending them to kindergarten. Instead of entering kindergarten as a 5 year old, if your child is on the cusp of the grade cutoff, that is, one of the youngest children in the grade, you would hold him or her back one year, and he or she would enter kindergarten as a larger, more developed, 6 year old.

The Rat Wheel and 7 Signs That You’re Caught In It, Baby

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

“I observe that many people seek happiness “out there”. They imagine it will come to them if they get a raise, a new car, a new lover, or something else they want but do not have. My own experience, repeated many times, is that the actual reward of getting and having, is usually much less than the one imagined.” Dr. Andrew Weil

Have you ever experienced any of these situations:

- You’re walking down the aisle at your wedding, and a family member jokes in their wedding speech, “When is the baby coming?”
- You give birth to your first child, and 3 months later, someone asks you, “When is baby #2 coming?”
- You give birth to baby #2, and 3 months later, someone asks you, “When is baby #3 coming?”
- You got a 9/10 and someone asked you where the other 1 percent went.
- You wait for something to happen. Something great happens, and the next day, it’s already old news. Onto the next. More expectations to perform other great things.

So my question to you is, “When is it ever good enough?”

Today is ‘Pink Shirt Day’ in honor of ‘National Anti-Bullying Day’: Warning Signs and Prevention

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

“Every seven seconds in Canada, a child is bullied. This alarming statistic fuels the passion behind the 5th annual anti-bullying campaign Pink Shirt Day – Bullying Stops Here!” (PinkShirtDay.ca)

I am certain most of you have heard of the dramatic increase in teenage suicides over the past few years. A horrific number. In Houston , Texas an eighth-grade 13 year old boy shot himself in the head after enduring what his mother and stepfather say was consistent harassment from four other students at Hamilton Middle School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.

In New York a Rutgers University freshman killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge . Tyler Clementi, 18 was humiliated when a roommate secretly recorded him making out with another male student and live-streamed the video to the Internet.
