Hot Summer Fashion Tips

By Guest Blogger Lisa Kisber

Getting off the fence is all about making decisions, taking action and committing to your decisions in life.  I was on the fence not one year ago, when I knew I loved and had an eye for fashion (I studied Fashion Design at FIT and Parsons), had a real knack for writing (I had seen the magazine world at work with a stint at W Magazine), but wasn’t quite sure how to marry these two talents.

Then a light bulb went off… I could find a way to make these two worlds of mine collide. All my years of experience could come together online, more specifically, in a style blog. I knew that if I just took action and committed to my passion, something good would come of it. And I can tell you, it has.

I have since become a stylist, a social media consultant, a fashion feature writer for Maxim Canada, and the official style blogger for LG Fashion Week, Beauty by L’Oreal Paris (the second largest fashion week in North America!)  I get to share my views on fashion with the world.  So, in effect, my own getting off the fence about writing about style, in turn helps other ladies off the fence about style… talk about a gratifying cycle.

The Perfect Body” as illustrated by Olympic Athletes.

When my girlfriend forwarded me Dr. Lisa Wade pictorial from the website Sociological Images this week, I thought it was quite an interesting topic of discussion. It shows, as Dr. Wade pointed out, “a wide variety of strong, healthy women and men who pursue their sport to excellence.”

None of these images have been photoshopped.

The point–  to show our children, that healthy men and women, who excel at their game, come in all different shapes and sizes. That there is no ONE perfect body. To love and embrace the body you were born with.

Thoughts?

Life Is A Choice

By Guest Blogger Kelly Falardeau

As I look back on my life, I think about why people have called me amazing. I certainly don’t feel amazing. I feel like I’m just like everyone else– living life. But another survivor friend of mine summed it up this way; she said, “Kelly, when people see someone has become a victim of a traumatic injury, they expect you to quit. We didn’t quit, we persevered.  And we didn’t let our scars stop us from accomplishing our dreams, hopes and passions. We went on to get jobs, husbands, kids and whatever we wanted. We became survivors, not victims.”

Growing up, I was never allowed to quit. Quitting was not even permitted in my vocabulary. I was taught that if I wanted ANYTHING in life, that I had to go out and get it. Nothing was going to be just handed over to me, and so if I wanted something, I had better figure out how to make it happen. This taught me very early to never quit. I learned that I had just the same options as everybody else did. It didn’t matter if I had scars all over my body, I was normal in the eyes of my family, and deserved a life just as much as anyone else did.

CAbi Scoop Fashion Week

Monday, January 24th, 2011

As a Blogger, you can imagine the amount of free swag n’ stuff that gets sent my way. But the truth is, I rarely accept ANYTHING. When I started this Blog, it wasn’t to do product reviews in exchange for “stuff.” It was a place where women sitting on the fence, much like myself, could come together, unite, vent, learn, laugh, and get off the fence. It wasn’t to receive free gifts– I can buy them myself. But when I was invited down with four other Bloggers to CAbi Scoop Fashion week in Nashville last week, I said yes. “Why?” you might ask, “Why would you care to go to a fashion show?” Well, I do love fashion, so confession number one, that was a little incentive. I also enjoy meeting other Bloggers whose Blogs I read. It always ends up being a jolly ol’ good girly time… that was reason number two. But the real reason, was the woman behind CAbi– Carol Anderson, a visionary and entrepreneur.

I had only heard about CAbi- Carol Anderson By Invitation. For over 25 years, Carol Anderson, a women’s clothing designer sold her collection in high-end department stores like Nordstroms and other specialty boutiques across the country.  Her closest girlfriends loved the clothes and always supported her. Carol soon realized that other fans of the brand wanted more from her – more of her designs, more access to the brand (other than just having them sold in department stores), so Carol and her husband Jan, in 2001, decided to launch Carol Anderson By Invitation, and now have over 2,700 consultants selling CAbi clothes around the country.
