We have a giant fruit basket that sits on the dining room table. My kids can take freely from it any time and I love that the most visible food in the house is fresh, delicious, seasonal fruit. I group similar items together in my fridge because it's easiest for me but I also have noticed that it makes things easier to find for my kids.
As for preparing healthy meals, I involve my kids as much as possible in meal planning and prep. My daughter and I created LaLa Lunchbox, (bit.ly/lalalunch) a fun and educational app for kids and parents to plan and pack healthy lunches. The app takes her lunch choices and turns them into a simple grocery list for me. Since we've started this process, there's less wasted food, which means less wasted money and my 6 yr old daughter is making terrific, balanced choices for herself. She's wrapping up school now but we plan to use it for camp lunch as well (and I use it to plan meals for my son too, who is about to turn 2). Would love to hear how other families are getting through these issues!

Great post. I also take my fruits and vegetables out of the crispers so I don't forget that they are there. I like the idea of grouping foods together by meals. That's a really great idea. Thank you for the informative post.
