R.I.P. Whitney Houston 1963-2012

If you follow this blog, you know that I take the weekends off to rest my head in order to come back refueled for the week with fresh content. But I had to acknowledge the death of one of my music idols, Whitney Houston. The year was 1986 when my parents took me to see Whitney Houston.  It was the second concert I had ever attended (second to Michael Jackson). We sat second row center.   I knew EVERY word to every song. There I stood for two hours mesmerized– braces, perm, dancing to all her hits. I remember it like yesterday. When Whitney threw me some of her autographed photos, I felt like the luckiest little girl in the world. I still have them today.

Today, I opted not to report the history of her life, nor her rise to stardom, nor her tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, nor her drug addiction. I think we all have the story somewhat straight. We all know she grew up a musical prodigy, surrounded and inspired by strong and soulful female singers; daughter of Cissy Houston, cousin of Dionne Warwick, and goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.

Today, I simply wanted to honor her memory. Whitney’s music will live on in all of us. But I weep for her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, too young to go through life without a mother. And for her mother Cissy, who should not have to outlive her child.

I wanted to leave you with two quotes that stood out on Twitter last night, as I sat glued to CNN in my cousin’s basement, quietly weeping, while the rest of the family watched the hockey game upstairs:

The second quote, eerily, by Whitney Houston herself.

One song comes to mind now, as we all sit wondering if addiction took another brilliant, shining star from us, too soon.

R.I.P. Whitney Houston. Gone too soon.

I’d love to know what Whitney meant to you.

      2009 RIP + love you :(:( :(((

    4. This is so sad what has happened to her. To be so talented, and beautiful and so young and to die so young is just astonishing. We hope she rests in piece. She was an inspiration to many.

    5. You and I are about the same age (give or take a year or two) and Whitney was certainly one of the voices of my teen years as she was for you. It is so sad that such an incredibly talented lady has had her life cut so short. If only she had taken a different road….. I hope that she has found peace

I just read online that her daughter was rushed to the hospital on a possible suicide attempt. Please spare this family any more pain.

    7. I too grew up with Whitney Houston; she was what my teens/early 20’s was all about. I saw her in concert 5 times (whenever she came to the UK, including when she performed at the Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley). The first film my husband took me to to see (when he was my then boyfriend) was The Bodyguard. So she really forms so much of the tapestry of my life.
I am currently living in Spain, and I got an early morning call from a friend in the UK asking me if I had heard the news (the same friend who rang me early Sunday morning when Princess Diana died!) I just went cold when I turned the TV on; stone cold.

I’m totally crushed. I saw on the news that there were prescriptions meds in her room and that she may have drowned. Drug addiction takes another brilliant artist again Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and now Whitney Houston. It’s a shame the system couldn’t get these people the help they needed.

I still can’t believe she is dead. RIP to the greatest voice this world has ever seen. A true talent and beauty inside and out.
