With back to school upon us (for some), or around the corner (for others), today is about sharing information with parents and students. Or not…

Frankly, today is about sharing information with all mankind. This is the most powerful thing I have seen in a long time, and needed to share it with my readers. My girlfriend Corine told me I could use her name, as it is her who turned me onto Khan Academy.

Watch.

I just love Bill Gates, on a side-note.

So who is Sal Khan and what is Khan Academy and why am I blogging about it today? Well, I’m not getting to paid to do so. I haven’t been endorsed by the Academy, in fact, they have no idea I am writing about them today. Why this is so intriguing, is because this is a breakthrough in learning for your child, and for you.

Khan Academy is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere.

All of the site’s resources are available to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. The Khan Academy’s materials and resources are available to you completely free of charge.

Your kids can use Khan’s extensive video library, practice exercises, and assessments from any computer with access to the web. YOU can educate yourself as well.

One example of its power– have a child who is having difficult in geometry? Are funds too scarce for a tutor?  Khan Academy will literally become that tutor. These tutorials are so well made, well explained, and are progressive as your child advances in their school curriculum. Do you see the power in that one example?

Every video is about 10-12 minutes in length on the things you and your child want to know– math, science, humanities, history, SAT’s, GMAT’s.  Wanna know what it means to “short the market” but are too embarrassed to ask? Wanna know what the “bailout” is? Wanna understand “currency effect on trade?” Wanna know the difference between bonds and stocks? There are over 2,400 videos, all free, and 70, 190,019 lessons learned.

Even more wild… teachers and coaches can access all of their students’ data if used in schools. You can get a summary of class performance as a whole or dive into a particular student’s profile to figure out exactly which topics are problematic. The class profile lets teachers glance at their dashboard and quickly figure out how to best spend their time teaching. You’ll know instantly if a student is struggling in multiplying fractions… or if she hit a streak and is now far ahead of the class.

If you’re still on the fence, watch this.

This, in my humble opinion, this can change the future of learning for our children. My girlfriend’s kids have been watching videos daily for almost a year. She is amazed at how their breadth and depth of knowledge has completely expanded. Her kids now watch them for fun.

So, today was just about showing you something new, if perhaps you have never heard of Sal Khan or Khan Academy.

And I would say, this guy is one to watch.

Happy Tuesday, readers!

Tell us, what do you think of Khan Academy? Would you have your child watch videos to assist them with learning or broaden their horizons? Would YOU watch? I’d love to know.
